No Limit on Wii U External Storage

While the Wii U only has 8GB or 32GB of internal storage, you can plug in a USB drive for additional storage. Unlike the Xbox 360, which arbitrarily limits your external storage to 16GB, the Wii U will not place any limits on external storage size.

Wii U Preview

Nintendo started off their event today by getting the big questions out of the way. The Wii U will launch on Sunday, November 18th in two configurations, a basic set for $299 and a deluxe set for $349. The basic set comes in white with 8GB of storage, a GamePad, GamePad stylus, sensor bar and HDMI cable. The deluxe version, available in black, ups the storage to 32GB and also bundles NintendoLand and stands for the console and the GamePad. The deluxe version also includes a "Deluxe Digital Promotion" which allows you to earn points for each digital download, then redeem those points for future downloads. Like Apple, Nintendo focused on what you can do with the console, rather than raw specs and how many megajiggajoules the system can pump out.

Hardware

Nothing new was shown today that we haven't already seen. The storage amount of 8GB for the basic system may seem small compared to other consoles, but the Wii U will allow you to expand storage very easily via SD cards or external USB drives.

Nintendo TVii

Nintendo TVii (yes, that's how they spell it) brings together media from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, your Tivo DVR, and live TV in one place. You'll be able to search across all these services in one place to find something to watch. You'll also have "second screen" functionality such as checking sports scores, social network updates, screenshots and polls related to the show you're watching. I was expecting the normal Netflix, Hulu et al. to be available on the Wii U, but having a single place to find shows1 is a nice feature that I'll use a lot.

All the functionality of Nintendo TVii will be included for U.S. and Canadian customers on launch day for no extra charge or monthly fee.

Games

The big game announcement was Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, but everyone was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was to see Bayonetta 2, and to find out it will be a Wii U exclusive. The first game was highly rated so this is a nice exclusive for Nintendo, it was also mentioned that the game would be published by Nintendo so the likelihood of this being a timed exclusive is small.

A new "attraction" for NintendoLand was shown, Metroid Blast which looks like a lot of fun. You get to run around as your Mii character in a Samus outfit shooting, morph balling and swinging around after enemies. This is just one of 12 "attractions" in NintendoLand, and it looks like it will be a great included game. Unfortunately it likely won't be as popular as Wii Sports was since the basic system does not include it.

The launch lineup looks really strong and has something for everybody.

I plan on getting the deluxe Wii U set, along with a handful of launch games: Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros U, Black Ops 2, Mass Effect 3, Darksiders 3, ZombiU and Assassins Creed 3. Sure the majority of those are games that are available on other consoles, but that also excites me. Nintendo needs third party support and to be on par with PS3 and Xbox for non-exclusive games, and this is a great start.

Farewell to the Wii

Stephen Totilo:

The Wii is, nevertheless, the console that ran some of my favorite games, including excellent versions of Mario, Zelda and Metroid. Its weird games were among the best oddball titles any gaming console has had. And it remains an innovator whose imitators have yet to improve upon it.

Apple Working on Pandora Rival

The move by Apple perplexed some analysts, who noted that the Internet radio business seemed too small — accounting for less than $1 billion a year in revenue, by some estimates — for Apple to bother with. Established players like Pandora also already distribute their services through apps on Apple’s devices.

I listen to music exclusively through radio services like Pandora, Spotify Radio and Songza.
